Beware of the Groomzilla

Brides are commonly assumed to be the planning-diva in the lead up to a wedding; the stereotypical bridezilla is known for lumbering the closest of family and friends with a high maintenance attitude for months on end while they tirelessly make sure all of her demands are met. But watch out people because there is a new kind of -zilla in town... the Groom!

More and more we are seeing the men take a much greater interest in their big day’s details. Let's face it, in times gone by they would be making sure the bar was well stocked and the music rocked but now, no no no...there is so much more to worry about! The Groom is now taking a leading role in how their big day unfolds and I have to say, here at OQ, we love it!

Today’s weddings seem so much more inclusive. Both personalities of the couple shine through and there are far less 'frilly' bits, and this is shown in so many ways...

  • Firstly, 'favourites' are a big hit. Whether that be favourite films, favourite places to go together, favourite computer games, favourite songs or favourite drinks. The Groom loves to make sure that however that is portrayed, whether in the form of table names or centre pieces, they have to be the very best from that selection. Getting creative with Star Wars models or picking the Legend of Zelda font for their table plan, it has to be just right and don't you dare try and stop them!

  • DIY is another hot topic. With the emphasis on an urban, industrial feel we are seeing Grooms get more and more creative in the garage. Whether it be a copper pipe arch to hang amazing flowers from or screwing hooks into MDF for a donut wall, they are so happy to find a part of the wedding where they truly get involved and enjoy. Don't stop them ladies! Not only are they saving you some cash from that ever increasing budget but it is another part of the day that brings a personal element that you can both be proud of.

  • Designing is everywhere. Maybe it is just the kind of couples that OQ attracts but we see so many of our Grooms into designing of some sort. And what do they do with this skill? They get stuck straight into the design of all of your stationary. It brilliant to see how passionate the guys get when they show us their invites and explain how they are going to follow that concept through to the name places, table plan and menus. Often the design depicts traits and inside jokes of both the bride and the groom, colours matching the overall theme of the wedding day and carefully selected fonts to tie in with the rest of the day. It looks perfect, and manages to sum you both up perfectly.

  • Music really can make or break a wedding vibe and don’t our Grooms just know it! Picking the event DJ or wedding playlist is a meaningful decision which impacts your special day in so many ways so compromise is key. The beauty of music is that both personalities can shine through as the night plays out – there will be enough time on your wedding evening for a chronological 60’s to noughties countdown if you really want it!
